Dead Peoples Things For Sale

One thing I will never turn down is a chance to go thrifting, or as I like to call it, rummaging through dead peoples things. If someone says "Hey, lets thrift." I am in my car faster than you can say Jack Robinson. Its an addiction, really.

Here are some views from the day:

Ya know, its a sad day when I cant afford a toy from GOODWILL for my daughter 

(not that I'd let her play with this one.)

This reminds me of something Sweet Green Tangerines mom said once, "Goodwills, its not just for poor people anymore." :)

 This vintage gem was almost purchased by my lil sis today. She is doing my nieces room in vintage toys. Wouldn't this Kewpie Doll be perfect?! We may have to go back before she leaves.

๏ Search for fabric for my kitchen. 

I need curtains in a bad way and not just anything will do.

If I could thrift something like the ones shown 
below, I'd be a happy girl.

Odds are that I will have to order. I hate buying new. Don't you? 

Thrift stores have spoiled me & my budget :)

I have been inspired.

 The Great American Apparel Diet

{no buying for one year}

I know that I am NOT that dedicated nor do I contain that kind of self-control to last me an entire year, like the ladies who took the Apparel Diet this past year.   

[That’s Insane!]  HOWEVER, I am going to take on my own mini variation of their Diet. Instead of no buying clothes for a whole year, I am setting a personal goal to not purchase new clothing for 6 months.  [Baby Steps, People]  I am going to allow myself the occasional Goodwill snag, but that is it.

I figure with now having a mortgage and extra bills, this is a fine time to really start limiting myself and learn more about the art of simplifying. 

Start Date: September 1, 2011 End Date March 1, 2011

So this means I need to get my shopping fix tomorrow :)

Mecca of Goodwills

Adventures of a Tangerine and a Potato continue...

Bran-Spankin-New Goodwill in Beaufort, SC. 

Huge and CLEAN- what more could a girl ask for? ... to go kid-less, would be a good start, but things being as they are, that is impossible. 

Aside from being grossly outnumbered by kids, Tang and I were able to have a good time & I am never one to miss an opportunity to embarrass my kids.

Ending the shopping Goodwill adventure 

with a few treasures:

 

Something + Glue = Rad

With Gorilla Glue in your corner, the creative possibilities are endless.

Who doesn't love a trip to Goodwill? or any thrifty store for that matter?

I especially love finding cute saucers or dessert plates and a pretty or just interesting candlestick. Since my spray paint is always near by, I have even painted plates or the sticks before gluing. -- No really, I think I have a problem when it comes to spray paint... 

This little dish I keep in my bathroom. Its perfect when I need a place to sit all those odd things I pick up and put in my pocket throughout the day.

With this one, I only painted the plate. I love the design on the edge :)

This one is in  my daughters room. I {heart} it so much!

No paint, just ran it through the dishwasher to get the Goodwill funk off it & Gorilla Glues the candlestick to the bottom of the plate. (fyi the frame that you hardly see was another Goodwill find. I painted and made it match her room. yay!)

Lovely Leg Warmers

Another Goodwill score. In the woman’s section, I found an unbelievably soft and adorable sweater. Pink and gray stripes, this was just screaming ‘Take Me and Make Me Yours!’ to me, but it was a size Small, which I am not. I look at the tag- 100% Cashmere, how could I resist? 

I brought it home and decided I would repurpose it and make my daughter, the ballerina, a set of leg warmers with the arms.  

Isn't she lovely? 

Step 1- Gently remove sleeves from sweater. I started out with a seam ripper, but ended up cut cutting them off. Because I did this, I need to make sure to stitch (or serge if you have one) at the cut to keep from fraying.

Step 2- Cutting the now legging to appropriate size to fit my 4 year old ballerina.

Ah, the perfect length!

Step 3- Stitching up the cut ends. Use a serger if you have one, but if not I just used a setting I thought would do the job...

Can you see it? So far it has kept them from unraveling. 

 

 This took me maybe 20 minutes to complete. Super easy!

BEFORE- Blah,  Who wants boring old white and wood colored things? Not I!

 

          I still find the transformation from a little paint to be amazing. 

And don't you love this color? :)

There is not a lot of change here, but I love the way they  turned out, for the most part.

(Notice that nothing has been done to the cigar box yet, I am completely uninspired right now. Soon it will get a makeover, 

just not yet)

 Painting is no where near as fun when I must renounce my love for spray-paint and go back the using a boring old brush. ho-hum. . .

So what do you think? Its painted and slightly distressed around the edges. I feel like it needs something else, though. I haven't quite figured out what yet. Suggestions?

 My darling, want-to-be-involved husband wants me to add a monogram on the side. I would have no problem with that, ya know, if I had one of these bad boys, the beloved Silhouette Digital Cutting Tool.    (hint-hint to the hubs)

I've entered in blog give-a-ways countless times but to no avail. Maybe someday. *Fingers Crossed*

When prepping to refinish the stool, I had an Ah-Ha moment. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do to the top, I flipped it over and saw the screw holes and simply removed the base from the top to make painting easier. I may still do something else with the top, but in the meantime I'm happy with it the way it is. I ordered a sample of Regal Plum from the Valspar free paint sample they are doing for 100 days. 

I think I am going to paint the top of the stool the plum color when it comes in the mail!!
