Dear Authors,
Humor me. Don’t just make me laugh, but make me snort and shoot Dr.
Pepper out my nose simultaneously. - This is my court and you are my jester. Entertain me. Show
me that you did not merely score high in your creative writing course, but you
also have a personality. I implore you,
PLEASE make me laugh!
Full disclosure, I do not read near as much as I should or
as much as I would like. My personal library is shabby in comparison to most mildly
avid readers.
The book:
I recently read Magical Thinking by Augusten Borroughs.
Perhaps it is because its so fresh in my mind that I am picking it as my Funny
book/memoir.
Augusten is a hilarious, self-loathing, gay man whom I now adore
and would love to spend an entire day people watching & making snide
comments with. Magical Thinking is not a
fiction book, rather a memoir of his life. He takes a ton of essays and crams
them into a book and somehow, it works. The way his mind
works, the way he will share thoughts that some readers (not myself) might find
off-putting, only makes me want to read more from him. He appeals to my dark side and makes me laugh out loud. He is my kind of author. Magical
Thinking is worth reading just for the story of Debby the dwarfish house
cleaner and the 'roid rage chapters alone.
See, you find this intriguing now, don’t you. My job here is done :)
"I myself am made entirely of flaws
stitched together with good intentions."
Surely you've seen this quote on Pinterest.
Now read the book and see why he says it.
Now read the book and see why he says it.
I hear he is compares to David Sedaris a lot. So,
I managed to get my hands on a copy of When You Are Engulfed In Flames
& plan on starting it tonight. I'm pretty excited!
I’ll let ya know how it goes.

Sounds interesting. I don't read a lot of memoirs... in my mind they're always dry and only interesting to the person who wrote them. But I know that's not true; I was just poisoned with a few bad ones at a young age. Maybe I should give this guy a shot. I also am dying to read the Bloggess' new memoir; I'm positive she's the "shoot-something-gross-out-your-nose" type of memoir-writer! If you like her kind of humor, you should check that out. I think it's called "Let's Pretend This Never Happened."
ReplyDeleteI love her! come to think of it, I used to follower her on Twitter, but I think that un-follow glitch may have gotten her. I havent seen anything in a while...
DeleteSedaris is hilarious-I did a few of his pieces (cut from books) for TFA (theatre-type thing, where you do prose, poetry, small skits) way back in the day. Some of it is nose-sniffling, tear inducing laugh worthy.
ReplyDeleteI read the first chapter last night. The daughter was having issues about staying in her bed, so I had to close the book and tend to her every diva need. I am anxious to open that baby back up and really get into it!
DeleteI read two of Augusten Burroughs books a few years ago and loved it! I've been meaning to pick up some of his other books. I may do that so for my trip to Texas! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
I've read one Augusten Burroughs book and LOVED it - it might be time to get some more! I enjoy David Sedaris, too.
ReplyDeleteI knew as soon as you mentioned Dr. Pepper in your opening lines that I would like this post. :) Haha I love memoirs, so I'll definitely give this one a try! My humor repertoire is sadly lacking.
ReplyDeleteThat does sound funny! I have Running With Scissors but like most of my books, I haven't read it yet :| I need to check this one out though. I tend to do better at getting into books when someone else tells me its good first.
ReplyDeleteThat's a GREAT quote. :)
ReplyDeleteyour enjoyment of it and the quote definitely got me intrigued. i'm more into memoirs than i was years ago.
ReplyDeletethanks!
I read his book Dry a few years back and loved it! This one has been on my wish list ever since. I'll get around to it one day!
